OMV Sustainability Newsletter
Sustainability Newsletter July 2020
Dear Sir or Madam!

Cooperation is key to addressing our industry’s sustainability challenges. This newsletter highlights our own projects and cooperations, with which we aim to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations, as well as of the energy and petrochemicals value chain. In our operations, we aim to significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions both, through conventional ways of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) (i.e. energy efficiency, equipment and process improvements), as well as powering our operations with renewable energy, therefore contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 7 "Affordable and Clean Energy" and 13 "Climate Action".

We think CO2 capture and utilization is a key circular economy technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning CO2 into a valuable raw material. We launched a partnership with Lafarge, VERBUND and Borealis to develop a plant that can capture CO2 from cement production and utilize it at industrial scale.

This newsletter brings you the recent milestones in OMV’s sustainability journey.

Stay healthy,
Your OMV Sustainability Team
OMV, together with Verbund, starts the construction of a photovoltaic plant for powering OMV’s operations in Gänserndorf, Austria
OMV and VERBUND, Austria's leading electricity company and one of the largest producers of electricity from hydropower in Europe, started the construction on Austria’s largest photovoltaic (PV) plant. This PV plant will power OMV’s operations and generate savings of around 10,000 tons of CO2 per year.

40 filling stations in Romania powered with solar energy
OMV Petrom installed photovoltaic (PV) panels at 40 filling stations in Romania to supply them with renewable energy for part of their electricity needs. The PV panels will produce more than 30,000 kWh of solar energy per year in each filling station, which will help reduce their carbon footprint. OMV has also installed PV plants in filling stations in Slovakia and Hungary.

Hywind: connecting North Sea platforms to an offshore wind farm for its energy needs
OMV is involved in the Hywind project via a 19% stake in the Gullfaks field; the project is led by Equinor. The project will directly connect five platforms in the North Sea to an offshore wind farm for their energy needs; this is the first such project in the world. By replacing the platforms' on-site electricity, currently generated by natural gas turbines, the project will help to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 200,000 tons per year.

Lafarge, OMV, VERBUND and Borealis join hands to capture and utilize CO2 on an industrial scale
Lafarge Zementwerke, a member of LafargeHolcim Group, OMV, VERBUND and Borealis co-signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the joint planning and construction of a full-scale CO2 capture and utilization plant by 2030. The plant will help capture CO2 and process it into synthetic fuels, plastics or other chemicals. This innovative project will significantly reduce emissions from cement production, establishing the CO2 as a valuable raw material.

Did you know?
Since its start in 2018, the ReOil pilot plant managed to successfully recycle 200,000 kilograms of plastic waste. This amount corresponds to what approximately 2,650 households produce in plastic waste from packaging in an entire year. This is equivalent to the population of a small town, like Melk in Austria.
OMV's recent achievements in social and community investments:
OMV biodiversity investment helps 150 of the world’s smallest seagulls make Wellington their home
About 150 white-faced storm petrels have made an 800km plane journey from the Chatham Islands to Mana Island off the coast of Wellington, thanks to funding from OMV New Zealand. The aim of the partnership is to establish a colony of white-faced storm petrels on Mana Island, to help restore the cycle of nutrients from sea to land, and improve the habitat for other animals and plants, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 15 “Life on Land”.
